What is considered Personal Information under FOIPPA?

Destination BC does not use this information to identify individuals who visit the Website unless required to do so as part of an internal investigation or other law enforcement purpose.
We also collect information provided directly to us by you. For example, when someone chooses to join our email list, we may collect their name, email address, country and province.

Anonymous Audience Data
We also collect aggregate, anonymized data from Other Tourism Organizations, and share such data with them. That data is used by us and by Other Tourism Organizations to create common audiences for serving online advertising and for co-marketing through website tags such as pixels and floodlight tags.
Storage, Access and Disclosure of Your Personal Information
Destination BC and our Service Providers (for the purposes of providing and supporting the Website and other services offered by us), may store or disclose your personal information outside of Canada in accordance with the FOIPPA regulations. You consent to the indirect collection of any such personal information by Destination BC, and to the storage and disclosure of that personal information inside or outside of Canada for the purposes set out above. Your consent is effective on and after the date of information collection and does not expire unless revoked by you in writing.

Security measures, such as the use of FTP secure sites and SSL encryption, have been integrated into the design, implementation, and day-to-day operating practices as part our commitment to protect the information we hold. Any personal information submitted on the Website is secure once it reaches the Destination BC server. In transit between a computer and the server, all information is secured using SSL encryption, which the web browser typically denotes using a lock icon.
Links to Other Websites
Destination BC occasionally runs a variety of contests on the Website that our online visitors can choose to enter at their option. We use online contest entry forms to collect personal information deemed necessary for your participation in a contest. While certain information is mandatory for participation, most information is optional. Contest entry forms differentiate between the two so that you are aware of what information is needed, and what information you need not provide in order to participate. As part of the contest entry process, we may provide an opportunity for you to give Destination BC permission to contact you in the future. Giving your permission for future contact is completely optional and does not impact your ability to participate in a contest.
When you provide us with your personal information to enter a contest, we retain and use it in accordance with FOIPPA. Your information is only used for the purpose for which it was collected (e.g., to support your participation in a contest), or for a use consistent with that purpose (e.g., to allow us to conduct tourism-related research or surveys or provide you with information on other contests or tourism opportunities with your consent). Our objective is to measure the success of our tourism marketing campaigns and help us understand the characteristics and travel preferences of our consumers in order to serve them to the best of our ability.
We work closely with our Information Technology team to ensure the contest entry data we receive is securely stored and may only be accessed by authorized staff and approved contest Service Providers. Any Service Provider that we engage for a given contest must comply with its legal requirements under FOIPPA and applicable policy for protecting personal information in order to do business with us. Effectively safeguarding all personal information in our custody is of paramount importance to Destination BC.
We may allow our Service Providers to place cookies on your devices and collect the IP address of your devices, which provides our Service Providers with your general location data. Our Service Providers may use this data to serve you with our advertisements, on the Website or elsewhere online, and to report to us on an aggregated basis on the effectiveness of our advertisements at inspiring tourists to travel to British Columbia and provide us with statistics on visitors to British Columbia (for instance, where they are coming from). In order to do so, our Service Providers may combine your IP address with other information that our Service Providers have obtained from other sources, as permitted by law.
