Boating & Sailing
Sailboat (Canadian Tourism Commission photo)
Vancouver Island is a prime boating destination for both novice and advanced boaters, and it offers marine landscapes from sheltered inland waterways to the rugged open ocean on the west coast.
The inshore waters around southern Vancouver Island provide excellent sailing and boating opportunities. One of the most popular boating destinations is the Gulf Islands, which provides a haven of safe anchorages, picturesque bays and charming towns.
Experienced, certified skippers or eager students wanting to learn the art of sailing will find skippered and bareboat charters available from a number of Vancouver Island communities. After setting sail, make use of the numerous outdoor activities on Vancouver Island, such as fishing, whale watching, and exploring beaches and coves.

Vancouver Island Sailing Courses
Qualified instructors provide individuals with the opportunity to achieve various levels of certification from the Canadian Yachting Association or the International Sail and Power Association.
Vancouver Island Sailing Regattas
Two notable sailing races start and/or take place in the waters around Vancouver Island. The annual Vic-Maui International Yacht Race is a demanding ocean race that starts in Victoria and ends in Maui, Hawaii, a distance of 2308 nautical miles.
The Van Isle 360 International Yacht Race is a 580 nautical mile circumnavigation of Vancouver Island. Starting and ending in Nanaimo, this biennial, inshore and offshore, 10-leg race offers stunning scenery and conditions that will challenge the most seasoned boats and crew.
Sailing and Boating Facilities
For visitors bringing their own boats or renting boats, there are numerous marinas on Vancouver Island and Victoria, particularly along the eastern shores of Vancouver Island and among the Gulf Islands. Gas docks, stores, pubs, showers, laundries, and other amenities are offered at many of the marinas. It's recommended that boaters and yachters contact their chosen marina to confirm hours of operation and facilities. Public boat-launching facilities are also available at many freshwater lakes.
Many coastal communities on Vancouver Island have public docks and moorage facilities that are open to all users. Visit the Harbour Authority Association of British Columbia for a comprehensive list of docks and amenities.
