Compulsive browsers make pilgrimages to "Booktown".
This designation marks towns and villages with extraordinary numbers of second-hand bookstores and antiquarian book shops. With 12 bookstores in a downtown radius of four blocks, Sidney scores as Canada's 1st.
Booktown
The very first Booktown was Britain's Hay-On-Wye, on the England-Wales border, with 1500 people and 30 bookstores. Sidney bookseller Clive Tanner brought the concept home and doubles as Booktown's founder.
Sidney Book Trek
Sidney's bookstores specialize in genres from children's books to military history and everything between. Wherever the reader steps, knowledge and literacy are no further than the turn of a page. View the Sidney book trek as a safari for words, whether the treasure is a rare first edition or a bestselling paperback potboiler.

Haunted Bookshop
A recommended start is the Haunted Bookshop, with its piled-high antiquarian books, leaning to British authors and lovingly kept section of children's books. By the way, that's Sir Walter Scott, author of Rob Roy and Ivanhoe, up on the wall.
Galleon Books & Antiques
How far to the next bookstore? A 10-second walk to Galleon Books & Antiques, an Ali Baba's cave of idiosyncratic bargains. The stacks cover a non-fiction territory from Canadiana to First Nations history. They come flanked with all manner of memorabilia and glittering collections of chinaware. Owners Rod Laurie and Brian MacLean regale browsers with tales of sourcing customers' consuming passions.
Book Cellar
The downstairs Book Cellar boasts 5,000 volumes of world military history. War? Will that be ancient or modern? Maps? To the left. Biographies? Right this way. Winston Churchill? Come check out the Churchillian collection. Plus aviation, naval history, heraldry and what-not.
Country Life Books
Country Life Books offers books on crafts and hobbies. Jump at up-to-date books on subjects from candlemaking to origami, all at second-hand prices.
