Every year from late April through May, flocks of sandpipers, plovers, Whimbrels, and many other shorebirds pass through the Tofino area. Thousands stop here to feed and rest as they make their impressive journey from South and Central America northward to their Arctic breeding grounds. The Tofino Shorebird Festival celebrates this impressive annual migration with a series of educational birding activities throughout the region. We draw on local and visiting experts to participate in the festival, offering guest lectures, birding workshops and much more! This is a great opportunity to experience the largest wildlife migration in the region, learn about these impressive birds, and understand why Tofino is one of the very best places in western Canada for bird watching.

The Market attracts up to 5,000 people a night who all come to savour the flavours, see the sights and listen to the sounds of a myriad of musical performers.

Start your summer off with a bang! Step back in time with a walk through Nanaimo's oldest heritage building and visit three floors of museum exhibits. Visitor information is also available during Bastion operating hours. Experience the cannon firing re-enactment ceremony from 11:45-12:00 daily. On Thursdays and Saturdays in July and August only the cannon firing ceremony features Highland dance performances by youth from the Brigadoon Dance Academy. These dance performances are a tribute to the Scottish families that immigrated to Nanaimo in the 1850s. The Bastion is located on Front Street in downtown.

"Make it, Bake it, Grow it, Gather it" is the market's principle. In a festive atmosphere with fresh food, live music and other activities, visitors and locals can shop and peruse from local artisans, home bakers, market gardeners, and wild food harvesters.
