Fishing
Fishing at sunset (Picture BC photo)
From May through October, the waters off Tofino represent some of the finest saltwater fishing grounds in the world.
Welcome to the realm of chinook and coho salmon, Pacific halibut, lingcod, snapper, dungeness crab and other fish congregating in the feeding grounds of Clayoquot Sound. Freshwater anglers have pristine Clayoquot rivers and streams all to themselves.
Catching the Tyee
Size counts: Haul in a salmon weighing more than 13.5kg/30lb and it's a tyee in Aboriginal parlance, the fishing grail. Landing a tyee can be one of the happiest moments in a fisher's life.
Saltwater Fishing Charters
There are more than a dozen charter operators ready to show anglers the catch of a lifetime. Fishing craft range from 5m/17ft open-air inshore boats to 12m/40ft fishing cruisers for offshore excursions. Half-day and full-day fishing excursions are easily arranged.

Winter Fishing, Crabbing and Prawning
Tofino 1st Class Fishing posts a hefty 12-month fishing schedule. It offers winter fishing for chinook salmon – "amazing scrappers and delicious eaters" up to "tyee" size of 13.5kg/30lb or more. Dungeness crabbing is prime in winter, too, when BC's signature shellfish is at its best. Combined fishing and prawning tours last from 6 to 8 hours.
Wilderness Freshwater Fishing
World-class freshwater fishing is just a cast away. Charters, such as Clayoquot Ventures, can offer day or overnight fishing trips to mountain lakes, rivers and streams. Fish for fish for fall salmon, sea-run cutthroat trout, rainbow trout and steelhead; lake fishing excursions are catch-and-release. Steelhead, an orange-fleshed member of the trout family, is one of BC's most prized game fish, whether at the end of a hook or on the plate.
Fly-Fishing School
The Tofino Fly Fishing School takes on newbies in groups of three right on the beach. At the helm is Master Instructor, Florian "Flo" Besson, who cast his own first line aged six in his native France. Classes accommodate beginner, intermediate and expert anglers with instruction in topics such as fly-casting techniques, fly-tying and stream entomology.
