A vast array of hiking trails – forest, riverside and near-vertical – are scattered throughout the Alberni Valley. Pick up maps and trail guides at the Visitor Centre.
Sign up for a group hike with the Alberni Valley Outdoor Club. Join the entertaining Sandy McRuer, a local forester and naturalist with Rainbird Excursions, on a variety of day hikes. He does the driving and guiding while delivering expert colour commentary.
Favourite spots in addition to the popular routes listed below include the China Creek Trail, Horne Lake Trail, Labour Day Lake Trail and the Kitsuksis Dyke. Enjoy an easy boardwalk stroll through Cathedral Grove's old-growth forest or go for the calf burn when grinding up the slopes of Mount Arrowsmith.
