Residents
Klemtu, meaning "blocked passage" in the Tsimshian language, is the traditional home of the Kitasoo and Xai'xais peoples. The Kitasoo people originate from Kitasu Bay, while the Xai'xais (pronounced "high hice") are from Kynoch Inlet in Fiordland Recreation Area.
The Kitasoo and Xai'xais people are warm and welcoming people, who watch over the area's pristine wilderness with a passion. Located in BC's Great Bear Rainforest, one of the largest protected areas in the province, Klemtu is on the doorstep to Princess Royal Island – home of the Kermode (Spirit) bear and the Kitasoo Spirit Bear Conservancy.
