River Rafting
Rafting (Reo Rafting Resort/Ryan Robinson photo)
River rafting on the Kicking Horse River is a blast.
The wildest conditions occur from May into late summer, when glacial melt water roars through dramatic rock-walled canyons towards the Columbia River Valley at Golden. Seven rafting companies operate on this Canadian Heritage River, each with certified and experienced guides running rafts for four to six people. Be prepared to paddle, and anticipate getting wet as you navigate this epic class III and IV whitewater.
Along the way, enjoy the scenery and watch for wildlife and the CPR (Canadian Pacific Railway) trains that share this spectacular valley.
Kicking Horse Rafting Packages
Rafting packages on the Kicking Horse all offer similar excitement. Typically, trips range from a relaxing 10km/6mi trip that is suitable for five-year-olds, to a marathon raft journey that starts with the same easy upper section and ends with the “rattle your teeth” class IV rapids of the Lower Canyon. Note that the Lower Canyon is closed when the river reaches the advanced class V level.

Rafting with Kids
For safety reasons, minimum age restrictions apply for more intense whitewater packages. It's not just that it's too late to get off once the raft is halfway down the canyon - but paddling ability is also an important requirement. However, younger children can still have a gentle whitewater experience with raft trips on the less severe, upper section of the river, followed by lunch on the riverbank.
Practical Points
- The rafting companies supply all necessary equipment, including wetsuits, waterproof outerwear, life jackets, helmets and paddles.
- Bring quick-drying shorts or swimwear, a fleece, footwear that will not be ruined by getting wet, and a sealable bag for items such as cameras.
- Pack a towel and some dry clothes to change into at the end of the trip.
- Advance reservations are essential for all raft trips. Round-trip transportation from Golden is usually included.
Stop by the Visitor Centre for more information on rafting in the area.
