Transportation & Maps
Fort Nelson is conveniently located along the Alaska Highway and two interesting driving routes, so car travel is the most obvious transportation choice.
However, bus transportation and air travel are also options. In Fort Nelson, there are frontage roads on either side of the highway, where many of the restaurants, gas stations, hotels, and shops are located. Drive, cycle, or walk around town. Car rentals are available in Fort Nelson.

Car Travel
Travelling by vehicle to Fort Nelson is especially interesting along the world famous Alaska Highway (Route 97). Begin the journey in Dawson Creek at Mile 0 of the Alaska Highway, through Fort St. John, and continue north to Fort Nelson (457km/284mi), which is Historic Mile 300. From here the highway moves through the northern Rocky Mountains to the Yukon border and beyond. All of the Alaska Highway has now been paved, but expect some construction along the way, especially in summer months.

Meander along the Alaska Highway through gentle countryside to Liard River Hot Springs. Much of the area, once a mixed deciduous and coniferous forest, was burned in the summer 2009 forest fire. Travel continues from Liard into the Rocky Mountains passing through Muncho Lake, Toad River, Stone Mountain, Tetsa River, and Steamboat Mountain. The distance from Watson Lake, Yukon to Fort Nelson is 531km/330mi.
Visitors traveling from the Northwest Territories in the north may choose an alternate route along the Liard Highway (Route 77). The Liard Highway passes through mixed forestland and the Petitot River valley. For those interested in a loop trip, the Deh Cho wilderness route connects the Alaska Highway to the Liard Highway.
Bus Transportation
Greyhound has a bus station in Fort Nelson, which provides access to numerous locations throughout Canada and the US.
Air Travel
Fort Nelson Airport offers flights with Central Mountain Air, which connects to numerous destinations in British Columbia and Alberta. Calgary charter companies also offer helicopter and small plane travel options.
