Fort Nelson

Transportation & Maps

Fort Nelson is conveniently located along the Alaska Highway and two interesting driving routes, so car travel is the most obvious transportation choice.

However, bus transportation and air travel are also options. In Fort Nelson, there are frontage roads on either side of the highway, where many of the restaurants, gas stations, hotels, and shops are located. Drive, cycle, or walk around town. Car rentals are available in Fort Nelson.

Contact the Fort Nelson Visitor Centre for maps of the area and more information about transportation options.

Car Travel

Travelling by vehicle to Fort Nelson is especially interesting along the world famous Alaska Highway (Route 97). Begin the journey in Dawson Creek at Mile 0 of the Alaska Highway, through Fort St. John, and continue north to Fort Nelson (457km/284mi), which is Historic Mile 300. From here the highway moves through the northern Rocky Mountains to the Yukon border and beyond. All of the Alaska Highway has now been paved, but expect some construction along the way, especially in summer months.
