In Fernie, life revolves around the vast amounts of powder that accumulate in and around this high mountain valley – everyone skis or snowboards here.

Fernie Alpine Resort is the local ski hill and it boasts big bowls and chutes for skiing and snowboarding.

The locals have an unofficial rule: when there's 20cm/8in or more of new snow overnight, the meeting moves to the mountain. With an average annual snowfall of 8.8m/29ft of snow, does anyone ever go to work?

Fernie Alpine Resort

The resort has 1,082m/3,550ft of vertical with 142 trails spread over approximately 1,000ha/2,500ac. In addition to abundant glades, chutes, and five huge bowls, the resort has a newly expanded rail park and 14km/9mi of groomed cross-country ski trails.
