Recreation sports events in British Columbia showcase the province’s beautiful and diverse landscape in epic displays of athleticism and sport.

Sporting action happens year round; watch top athletes compete on ski hills, in mountain bike parks, along roads and everywhere in between. Many occur annually and include a festival component with entertainment, activities and exhibitions for visitors and athletes.

Watch as skiers and snowboarders send tricks down Whistler’s snow-covered slopes at the Telus World Ski & Snowboard Festival. Those same mountains play host to vertical-defying freeride and downhill mountain bikers in summer at the Crankworx Freeride Mountain Bike Festival. Take part in the Sun Run – Canada’s largest running event – or trade shoes for cowboy boots at the Williams Lake Stampede, an annual display of BC’s cowboy culture and heritage.

There’s extreme obstacle racing (like the challenging Tough Mudder), marathon races that wind along scenic BC roads and cities, cycling grand prix races, multiple sport events, and beach volleyball tournaments among others.

Outdoor Skating Rink - The Fairmont Empress - Victoria

Operating from November 20, 2014 until mid-January 2015, the approximately 60' x 90' covered rink will offer public skating 5pm - 9pm weekdays and 12pm to 9pm weekends. Skate rentals, Skate 'n Date nights and Family Skate afternoon are some of the ways to enjoy the tradition of winter skating. For groups there are Office Skates, Holiday Parties on Ice, and Break + Skate meeting options. Special seasonal festivities include Sunday Skates with Santa, and Christmas Eve Skating with the Elves, hot cocoa and cider. The cost is $10 per person, $5 for children aged 10 and under and rentals are available at $5 per pair.

The valley will echo with excitement when the 5th Annual Winter Festival ramps up. This event just keeps getting bigger and better as each January sees scores of snowmobilers from throughout the region head to Valemount where they can test their endurance and speed in any number of the racing events.

There are 5 classes of drag races, including stock, improved, mountain, pro and amateur who battle it out for the cash prize. There are even races for children in the mini-sled class!

For hockey fanatics, it's hard to imagine it getting any better than this. Invermere has been named the host city for this sanctioned qualifier BC Eastern Regional Pond Hockey Championships. Outdoor rinks, on either Lake Windermere or Lake Lillian, are approximately 75' x 150', nets are 6' wide and 10" tall and side boards are made of snow. It's 4-on-4 hockey with no goalies; teams can have up to 6 players.

Saturday is classic technique and Sunday is skate technique. There are lots of age categories for all events.

There are distances for all ages and abilities and awards will be presented to the top skiers in each category on both days. There are lots of draw prizes to be had. Top male & female will be awarded a special prize for the two day total time.
