Armstrong (population 4,342) is the quintessential small farming community with a pleasing blend of country activities and outdoor recreation.
The town's authentic western look is complemented by its heritage buildings, shady streets and huge fair grounds.
Armstrong gives lots of options for taking in the country vibes. Walking down the main street with its western heritage feel and general store is a good start.
Country Experience
From April through November, stroll the farmers market Saturday mornings for a taste of all that the region has to offer. But don't miss a drive through the countryside to stop by farms and orchards, buy honey, pick apples, select a Halloween pumpkin and hug a miniature horse.
Drama on the Farm
Drama fans combine an evening at the theatre with a trip to the farm in a thespian experience that is way outside the box. The professional Caravan Farm Theatre Company stages its productions and events outdoors – on a farm – three seasons of the year. Armstrong's acclaimed community theatre group is also worth a look.
Things to do in Armstrong
The Spallumcheen Valley and surrounding highlands present many opportunities for hikers to get close to nature. Hiking trails lead to wetland bird watching sites, forested lookouts and the dizzy heights of the Enderby Cliffs. Golfers tee up on a nine-hole course minutes from downtown, while those interested in shopping can explore quirky boutiques, antique stores, a homemade soap emporium and an artisan cheese shop.
Heritage Sites
Armstrong is first and foremost an agricultural town with a rich farming tradition. History buffs can explore these traditions at a heritage cattle ranch as well as the Armstrong Spallumcheen Museum and Art Gallery.
Community Events
Armstrong keeps the country spirit alive with a host of annual family fun events including an 11-day run up to Canada Day that's been hailed by the Canadian government as a model for other communities. Fall is especially busy with an old-time steam tractor plowing match, pumpkin harvest festival and an outstanding fall fair, the Interior Provincial Exhibition and Stampede, known locally as the IPE.
