The area around Vanderhoof has hundreds of rivers and lakes that expand in all directions.

Some are just a few minutes drive away while others are best for overnight excursions. In addition to rainbow trout, species in the area include whitefish, char, Dolly Varden, lake trout, kokanee and more.

Depending on the fishing spot, anglers can bring a boat and equipment or stay at one of many fishing lodges located south of town. Several lodges offer guided fishing, rental boats and equipment. One popular, but more expensive, option is to fly into Tweedsmuir Provincial Park on the Nechako Lodge floatplane.

Nechako White Sturgeon

An incredible fish in the area to view (but not catch) is the Nechako white sturgeon, the largest freshwater fish in Canada. It's illegal to fish for these sturgeon, but the species is nevertheless considered an important cultural aspect of the Vanderhoof community. Locals are intent on saving it and aim to develop a permanent hatchery for the fish.
