The backcountry of Whistler is a magical space in the mountains; a place where you can experience nature like never before. Stand outside and hear nothing but the rustling of the trees and movement of the animals. Sit in a warm, remote cabin and look out to miles and miles of mountain ranges while being engulfed by the snowy beauty of your surroundings.

Usually, the barrier to entry for accessing the backcountry is high; you need to own a snowmobile, know how to drive in expert terrain, and be trained in backcountry safety… but not with Canadian Wilderness Adventures (CWA). CWA is one of Whistler’s award winning adventure companies, with generations of experience in the Whistler backcountry. Their tours provide access to terrain that usually only the experts get to experience. It is that access that attracted me to try out their popular Yukon Breakfast Snowmobile Tour. The experience gave me a chance to practice my snowmobiling skills and fill my belly with yummy food at the same time.

The morning started in the Whistler Village, where we signed in, grouped up and jumped in the van to head towards Whistler’s Callaghan Valley, the site of the 2010 Winter Olympics Nordic Events. We arrived hungry as we knew a big cabin breakfast was waiting for us in the mountains.

When we arrived, the guides lead us to a remote cabin. Inside, there was a warm hut filled with gear for everyone to bundle in for the ride, and the guides ran us through a snowmobile introduction and a safety brief.

Filled with excitement, the group strapped on our helmets and jumped on their snowmobiles. The engines revved up and the morning started off with an easy ride up to the cabin. On the way, the guides had us practice driving on tighter trails and making tighter turns on easy mountain trails. Once our new skills were mastered, the group continued up and up into the beauty of the mountains.

I took a deep breath and enjoyed the morning as we carved our way through the remote backcountry of the Callaghan Valley to the Canadian Wilderness cabin on Sproatt Mountain.

At the cabin, warm coffee and tea was flowing and breakfast was hot and ready-to-eat. Cooked on an old-fashioned wood stove, the Yukon breakfast is a skillet-style mountain feast including Canadian back bacon, Yukon gold potatoes, scrambled eggs, cheddar cheese, sauteed onions, and bell peppers along with pancakes and real Canadian maple syrup.

After breakfast, the guides welcomed us to “let’er rip” on the frozen lake below the cabin. We had the choice of chancing the steep drop into the lake or taking the easy way down to the open field to practice our skills. The guides were there to make sure everyone was having fun, challenge us on difficult terrain, or for some of us, just teach the basics so we could leave feeling confident on a snowmobile.

Once we had our fill of free time, everyone regrouped and started on the descent back to the valley. The ride down was even better than the way up. The view was unbelievable and the guides gave us moments to stop and take it all in.

The entire tour took about four hours and was an incredibly fun time, for both the solo adventurers and families. For those of you who would rather sit back and enjoy the ride the sleds are built for two people so you can double up and let the driver do all the work!
