For great exercise, fun, and adventure, there’s no better way to see the glory of the Canadian Rockies than by strapping on a pair of snowshoes and getting out in the crisp winter air. Snowshoeing is one of the fastest growing winter sports in BC, and it’s no wonder—it’s great for all ages, inexpensive to pick up, and easy to learn.

Here are three excellent snowshoeing destinations in the Canadian Rockies, courtesy of the BC Visitor Centre at Mount Robson.

1. Island Lake Lodge Catskiing

Life is springing back into action, with sunnier days rekindling our passion for exploring attractions in Metro Vancouver, Victoria, and Kelowna. Spring brings fresh opportunities to taste seasonal bounty, go on outdoor adventures close to the city, and reconnect with locals and loved-ones alike.

Whether you’re reconnecting with nature near Victoria, saying, “cheers” to a creative cocktail in Vancouver, or soaking up the sun in Kelowna, there’s plenty of things to keep you busy in BC’s major cities this spring.

Island Lake Lodge is an incredible backcountry resort located 12 km (7.5 mi) west of the city of Fernie. Ride a cat-ski up to this winter wonderland, and enjoy some of the wonderful facilities available. For a romantic overnight vacation, book a stay in one of their gorgeous deluxe guest rooms. Spend the day snowshoeing around the lake, taking in the beauty and enjoying the solitude along regularly groomed trails; afterwards, relax and enjoy a massage or body treatment, available at the on-site spa. Or enjoy a meal while taking in the expansive Lizard Range of the Rocky Mountains.

2. Kimberley Alpine Resort

Located just 4 km (2.5 mi) from the city of Kimberley, Kimberley Alpine Resort offers an exceptional and unique snowshoeing experience. Enjoy outstanding views from the mountaintop with the Kootenay Haus Cabin Mountain Top Snowshoe S’mores Tour. This 2-hour tour starts at 5:15 pm, and begins with a ride up the North Star Express chairlift to the top of the mountain, where the scenery will take your breath away. From the lift, enjoy a 30-45 minute snowshoe trek to Kootenay Haus, where you’ll be met with a hearty spread of hot drinks and s’mores; the tour ends with a leisurely ride down the chairlift back to the resort. This tour is ideal for beginner snowshoers, with gentle terrain to practise your skills.

3. Lake O’Hara Backcountry Lodge

The Lake O’Hara Lodge is nestled in the Rocky Mountains, in Yoho National Park. Located 82 km (51 mi) from Golden, this incredible backcountry destination, blanketed in snow, is an alpine dream for any winter sports lover. Looking to get away from it all? The nearest road is located 11 km (7 mi) from the lodge, and the only way in is a scenic ski or snowshoe along the access trail. The main lodge can house up to 16 guests, and experienced and passionate guides provide insightful stories, as well as tips and advice to improve your skills. After an exhilarating day spent playing in the powder, return to the lodge to break bread, relax, and steam away the day in the wood-fired sauna.
