Whistler River Rafting
Rafting in Whistler, Tourism BC/Dannielle Hayes photo
Whistler is in the heart of the Coast Mountains, where rugged topography and generous runoff from melting winter snows (which often total 10m/33ft or more on Whistler Mountain) provide some of British Columbia's best river rafting in the late spring and summer.
When rafting through a spot of calm water, be sure to look at the scenery. Don't be surprised to spot bald eagles above, black bears or deer on the shore, and glacier-capped peaks in the distance.
One of the area's most accessible introductions to whitewater rafting is just outside of town. Start on placid Green Lake and learn the basics of paddling from certified professional guides, then spend an hour running the mild, bouncy Class II rapids of Green River (visit BC Rafting for information on rafting classes).
Looking for something more hardcore? Spend a full day tackling Class III and IV whitewater on the Elaho and Squamish rivers. With rapids like Devil's Elbow and Steamroller, these rivers are sure to exhilarate even experienced paddlers.

Just north of Whistler in the Pemberton area, check out the continuous Class III whitewater of Birkenhead River. And an hour south of town is Squamish, a rafting hotbed known as the "Outdoor Recreation Capital of Canada."
In the winter months, make the quick drive south to Brackendale (just north of Squamish) and take an "eagle safari" float trip on the Lower Cheakamus or Squamish rivers. From November to February, record numbers of bald eagles flock to local rivers to feed on spawning salmon, and a raft is the best viewing platform there is.
From Whistler and Squamish to the Class V intensity of the Stein River, the Vancouver, Coast & Mountains region is home to some of Canada's best rafting.
Getting There
Whistler is a 2-hour drive north of Vancouver on the scenic Sea to Sky Highway. It is easily accessible by car. Numerous bus companies also service the city. Many local rafting companies will provide shuttle service from Whistler Village to their river-side location. Always check with operating companies for specific directions.
When to Go
With the exception of winter eagle-viewing float trips, most rafting companies in the Whistler area generally operate from May to September.
Practical Points and Rafting Safety:
- Whitewater rafting poses inherent risks, but with proper guidance, preparation and common sense, these risks are greatly diminished. Nonetheless, companies will require participants to sign a waiver and release of liability prior to setting out.
- Rafting in BC is strictly regulated by the provincial government, and rafting companies will provide certified and experienced guides who ensure that trips are as safe and enjoyable as possible. Always arrange your trip with a licensed river rafting company.
- Generally, kids age 10 and older can participate in most rafting trips, though more difficult runs require stronger paddling and may have a minimum age of 15 or 16. Some of the more low-key motorized and float trips are suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels. Age and fitness restrictions will vary by operating company and by route, so always check with the company in advance.
- All specialized gear (including wetsuits, lifejackets, waterproof jackets, helmets and paddles) is typically provided by the operating company. Guests are usually advised to bring the following: quick-drying shorts or swimsuit (no cotton); shoes or sandals that can get wet (flip-flops are not advised); a fleece or sweater (no cotton); a towel; sunscreen; sunglasses (with lanyard); a dry change of clothes; and a sealable bag for personal items such as cameras. Items required may vary by operating company and time of year; check before you go.
- Always book rafting trips in advance.
