Kayaking & Canoeing
Family kayaking (Dave Heath photo)
The four-season resort community of Whistler offers numerous kayaking and canoeing opportunities on placid lakes surrounded by glacier-capped Coast Mountain peaks.
More kayaking and canoeing is available nearby in Vancouver and the Vancouver, Coast and Mountains region.
The Whistler Valley is home to five freshwater lakes that lure kayakers and canoeists all summer long. Highlights include Green Lake and Alta Lake. Don’t miss the River of Golden Dreams.
All of Whistler's lakes are in close proximity to the Village and are accessible by car, public bus, bicycle and foot. Guided tour companies often provide transportation from Whistler Village to the various paddling destinations.
Where to Canoe and Kayak
Just north of Whistler Village, Green Lake's aquamarine waters and forest-lined shores give way to spectacular views of local mountains. The lake's rainbow trout, kokanee, and Dolly Varden make for some great fishing opportunities, too.

Alta Lake has parks on its north, south and east shores, and a mountain rising 1,844m/6,051ft on its west. With majestic scenery, calm waters, and convenient canoe and kayak rental opportunities, Alta Lake is a hotspot for local and visiting outdoor enthusiasts.
One of the most popular paddles in Whistler is a guided run down the River of Golden Dreams. Meandering through a lush watershed area, this tranquil river connects Alta Lake to Green Lake and features great wildlife viewing opportunities along the way.
Guided Tours and Rentals
In the summer months, guided kayak and canoe tours, as well as rentals, are readily available around Whistler. Most guided paddling excursions last about three hours, but customized tours can often be arranged. Some companies offer self-guided tours – they provide pick-up and drop-off service, and you get a private paddling experience. Guided tour and rental companies will usually supply all necessary gear and safety equipment, or will provide guests with a list of items to bring.
When to Paddle in Whistler
While it's usually possible to kayak or canoe Whistler's waters from April to October, it's generally agreed that the best paddling opportunities are found from June to September.

The River of Golden Dreams is a flat water serpentine river that winds it's way from Alta to Green Lake in Whistler. No rapids, just some ripple, but the twists and turns will keep you wondering what's around the next corner. Beaver, beaver dams and lodges, eagles, osprey, river otter, black bears, birds that burst off the water in front of your boat and glacier capped mountain views. Warm up on the lake to start then enter the river. Guides are recommended. This trip has been offered for over 100 years and is an annual event for many resort guests.
