Celebrating 50 years of images, Wildlife Photographer of the Year showcases award-winning images that tell the astonishing stories of our natural world while pushing the boundaries of technical skill. With more than 42,000 entries from 96 countries, this exhibition celebrates the beauty and magnificence of the world in which we live, as well as acting as a stark reminder of the fragility of nature.

The striking exhibition features 100 large-scale, back-lit photographs that include some of the world's most respected nature photographers and wildlife experts.

Wildlife Photographer of the Year is co-owned by the Natural History Museum, London, and BBC Worldwide.

The Royal BC Museum has partnered with the First Peoples' Cultural Council on this innovative exhibition that celebrates the resilience and diversity of First Nations languages in BC in the face of change. BC is one of the planet's most linguistically diverse regions. From a global perspective, it's known as a linguistic "hotspot" because of the diversity and vitality of our First Nations languages, of which 34 are spoken here. In May 2014, the RBCM Invertebrate team boarded a Canadian Coast Guard research vessel set to sail along the North Coast of British Columbia. For two weeks, Dr. Melissa Frey, Curator of Invertebrates and Heidi Gartner, Collection Manager of Invertebrates along with their colleagues from Fisheries and Oceans Canada, combed the remote seascapes of northern BC in search of living treasures. Join us as they document their discoveries of the diverse and the exotic, and discuss the importance of stewardship for these northern shores. This field work was generously funded by Teck, Lead Partner in Biodiversity. Event repeats Saturday Feb. 7th

Archives Lecture - Ship Building in Victoria and Vancouver in WWI - Chris Madsen From 1917-1919, BC became the largest producer of war-purpose merchant ships for the Imperial Munitions Board, coordinated in part by Peter Butchart, the Vancouver Island cement magnate. This transformational role for BC created a legacy of military shipbuilding that continues today. Chris Madsen is a Professor in the Department of Defence Studies at the Canadian Forces College and Royal Military College of Canada in Toronto, Ontario. He teaches senior and mid-rank officers from the Canadian Forces and foreign armed forces in the area of military planning and operations. Event runs 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM
