To reach Vanderhoof by vehicle, drive northwest along Highway 16, the main highway that runs east-west in northwest BC.
Vanderhoof is approximately 100km/60mi (less than an hour's drive) from Northern British Columbia's largest city, Prince George. In the other direction along Highway 16, the next closest community is Fort Fraser (about 35km/22mi away).
Car Travel
It's easy for visitors to explore Vanderhoof's small downtown area by foot, but to experience the natural beauty of the area and numerous recreational activities, a private vehicle is best. Explore the area south of Vanderhoof on the Big River Country driving route.
The backroads south of town are accessible but drivers can easily get lost. Make sure to bring a good map and pay careful attention to the road connections. Also, keep an eye out for logging trucks as roadways are still active. Car rentals are available in Prince George.

Air Travel
Vanderhoof Airport has three landing strips but no commercial flights. Visitors with their own aircraft or those who want to book aerial tours or charter flights will find it convenient. A few companies offer charter service locally – either in helicopters, floatplanes, or other small airplanes.
Many visitors fly to Prince George then rent a car and drive to Vanderhoof. Various airlines, including Air Canada and Central Mountain Air, fly to and through Prince George connecting to other parts of the province, including Vancouver several times a day.
