Vancouver Climbing & Caving

It's no secret that Vancouver is a great hub for some of the best rock climbing in the region at Whistler, Squamish, the Stawamus Chief, the Tantalus Range, but few visitors know that the city boasts its own piece of climbing heaven.
Scenic Climbs at Lighthouse Park
Located in the suburb of West Vancouver, less than half an hour's drive from downtown, Lighthouse Park is home to gorgeous oceanfront cliffs and some pretty good bouldering, too.
If the idea of top-roping with the Pacific Ocean at your back sounds appealing, follow trails from the parking lot through old growth forest to Juniper Point. A temperate coastal climate means snow rarely falls at lower elevations, and some climbers frequent Lighthouse Park year round.

Climbing Gyms
If the elements do interfere with your outdoor climbing plans, head to one of several indoor climbing gyms in the Vancouver area and hone the skills you'll need when the weather improves.
Learn from the Locals
Vancouver is home to numerous outdoor clothing and equipment stores that are staffed by and cater to dedicated outdoor enthusiasts. These can be great places to pick up necessary equipment, route advice, and insider tips.
Rock Climbing and Mountaineering Safety
- Beginners should consider basic climbing and belaying instruction in the safe and controlled environment of indoor climbing walls and seek instruction until they are confident and able to attack more challenging routes.
- All climbers and mountaineers – regardless of their level of expertise – must thoroughly investigate, and have a good understanding of all gear, safety and weather-related (eg avalanche safety) requirements prior to setting out on any outdoor excursion of this nature.
- In order to avoid injury, get advice from local guides, clubs or associations before venturing out.
- Also make sure that your travel health insurance is also up to date and includes separate coverage for your chosen activity.
