Although Emily Carr described herself as an isolated little old woman on the edge of nowhere, her work has a universal appeal. With this exhibition, the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria will become the premiere destination on Vancouver Island to visit and learn about Emily Carr through her paintings. On the Edge of Nowhere will include a historical survey of Carr's artistic career, featuring pieces in all the media & styles she explored & perfected. It will also focus on Carr's influences & inspirations, such as European modern art, members of the Group of Seven artists, First Nations artists and Carr's spirituality.

Oak Bay Marine Group's annual celebration of art, Painters at Painter's, is hosted in May each year at world-renowned Painter's Lodge in Campbell River. Each year over 1000 guests meet & talk with the artists & take in one of the most impressive collections of artistic talent to be found under one roof anywhere in Canada. Artists give demonstrations, participate in panel discussions & create beautiful works in the resort's gardens, giving the public a rare opportunity to watch & learn from the masters. Quadra Island Artists host their annual Studio Tour June 1st, 2nd. Quadra is in the Discovery Islands, just a short ferry ride from Campbell River. Visitors can check out studios where artists work in glass, stone sculpture, pottery, photography, printmaking, painting & other media. A great opportunity to meet the creative people behind the artwork & to explore Quadra Island. Tour the studios, go for a picnic on Rebecca Spit, enjoy the view of the mountains across Sutil Channel - a perfect weekend outing. After the opening June 1st & 2nd weekend, many studios continue to welcome visitors throughout the summer.

Each year the Community Arts Council of the Saanich Peninsula presents two studio tours; one in the spring & one in fall. The many local artists who register for these tours open their studios for free to the public. Please see our website for more details.

Master sand sculptors travel from all corners of the globe to participate in this remarkable competition & exhibit.

Sculptors have 24 hours over 3 days to create masterpieces from just sand & water.

The competition, which is an official World Sand Sculpting Championships qualifying event, begins with the "pound up" (when sculptors build & fill their forms) on July 12 & the winners are announced on July 14.

The gated exhibit is open to the public until August 18 & votes are taken for people's favourite sculpture.

Entry to the exhibit area is by donation (suggested donation: $2.50 per person).

The Sooke Fine Arts Show provides the opportunity for the finest artists from Vancouver Island & BC's Coastal Islands to showcase & sell their work. Along with the more than 8,000 annual visitors who attend, the 11-day show draws hundreds of art patrons from British Columbia, western Canada, & the United States.
