Routes to Vancouver Island
BC Ferries provides several vehicle-accessible ferry options for travelling from the mainland to Vancouver Island.
Driving in Winter
BC's highways are ploughed, sanded, and salted when necessary throughout winter. In some cases, road closures may be necessary so allow extra time to reach your destination. A number of the highest highway passes are occasionally deemed avalanche-hazard zones. In such cases they will be closed to traffic while avalanche-control measures are taken. Avoid stopping in posted avalanche zones.
Snow tires are recommended for travel during winter. Some highways in BC require snow tires by law. Most rental agencies equip cars with snow tires and ski racks to accommodate visitors arriving for ski vacations, but be sure to check in advance.
