Backcountry Skiing

Backcountry skiing areas in the rugged Coast Mountains are graced with an abundance of snow – some peaks can receive up to 15m/49ft of powder annually.
The Vancouver, Coast & Mountains region offers a huge variety of backcountry skiing adventures, ranging from a quick Vancouver day-trip to remote multi-day tours. Find fresh powder near Pemberton, Sechelt, Hope, or on the North Shore. Nearby Whistler also has great backcountry ski terrain.
Backcountry skiing and avalanche safety courses are available in Vancouver and Pemberton. Backcountry skiing here is mostly self-guided, but some companies run guided backcountry trips in Pemberton. Trips range from one to seven days and cover diverse terrain. Spend nights in a tent or relax at a luxurious backcountry lodge.

Self-guided Tours
There are numerous backcountry ski huts and lodges throughout the region. Options range from rustic "bring your own stove" shelters to deluxe accommodation with gourmet fare. Local ski clubs can be excellent sources of information. Even experienced skiers should consider hiring a local guide when heading into unfamiliar backcountry.
Backcountry Skiing near Pemberton
Pemberton may receive less snow than other locations, but it boasts some of the driest and fluffiest powder. Venture to Duffey Lake Provincial Park for easy access to wide-open meadows, bowls, ridges and glaciers. Experts love the challenging steep terrain around Joffre Lakes Provincial Park – mounds of powder sit on slopes of 45-50 degrees. For a multi-day trip, head to the area around Birkenhead Lake Provincial Park and choose from numerous two to seven day routes.
Backcountry Skiing on Vancouver's North Shore
Want access to up to 10m/33ft of powder less than an hour outside Vancouver? Then head to Cypress Provincial Park and Mount Seymour Provincial Park. Strap on the skins and ascend through old-growth forests for stunning views of Vancouver and Howe Sound, and be back in Vancouver for lunch.
Backcountry Skiing on the Sunshine Coast
Most people don’t associate fields of untouched powder with the Sunshine Coast, but Tetrahedron Provincial Park (northeast of Sechelt) is a backcountry skiing paradise. The park is an ideal place for beginner and intermediate backcountry skiers, as it has gentle terrain with easy-to-climb peaks, wide-open meadows and undeveloped wilderness. Stay overnight in one of the four basic, wood-stove heated cabins.
Backcountry Skiing in Manning Park
The weather in Manning Provincial Park (southeast of Hope) is colder and drier than most areas in the region, which means light snow and clear days. Enjoy a number of easy touring routes and short powder stash descents. Beginners can ski through forests and glades to Poland Lake, while skiers looking for more of a challenge should head to Frosty Mountain, the highest summit in the park.
Practical Points
- Access to routes may require four-wheel drive, tire chains or a snowmobile.
- Research, careful planning and avalanche skills training are key to a safe trip.
- Before going into backcountry, check local weather forecasts and avalanche conditions. The Canadian Avalanche Association is a good resource.
- Travel with and know how to use proper equipment. An avalanche transceiver, avalanche probe, metal avalanche shovel, first aid kit and appropriate layers of clothing are necessary.
- Ski with a professional backcountry ski guide or with experienced skiers. Always travel with a group and be prepared with rescue equipment.
