Bear Watching
Grizzly bear crossing a stream (Canadian Tourism Commission photo)
Black bears abound on the shores of Clayoquot and Barkley Sounds near Ucluelet.
At low tide, they gather on the shores in search of rock crab. Bear watching tours are taking their place as second only to whale watching. Visitors can tour by sea kayak or canoe, zodiac or cruiser to look for bears in the wild. Boats come close but maintain safe distances for both bears and people, so bring zoom lenses. The wildlife photographer has never had it so good.
Stop by the Ucluelet Visitor Centre for more information on tours.
