Every year from late April through May, flocks of sandpipers, plovers, Whimbrels, and many other shorebirds pass through the Tofino area. Thousands stop here to feed and rest as they make their impressive journey from South and Central America northward to their Arctic breeding grounds. The Tofino Shorebird Festival celebrates this impressive annual migration with a series of educational birding activties throughout the region. We draw on local and visiting experts to participate in the festival, offering guest lectures, birding workshops and much more! This is a great opportunity to experience the largest wildlife migration in the region, learn about these impressive birds, and understand why Tofino is one of the very best places in western Canada for bird watching.

Imagine achieving marathon success surrounded by crisp ocean air, lush forests and the warm and friendly people of Ucluelet . It is a day that will be etched in your memory for many years to come!

New Course Incorporates Wild Pacific Trail - less hills but more trial run! Maps available soon. The course will be off the main highway, with start and finish in Ucluelet. There will be road portions on a less travelled two-lane highway to Port Albion, followed by bike path and Wild Pacific Trial portions. The full course partially consists of hard packed gravel trail, and may not be for all running abilities.

The Tofino Saltwater Classic Fishing Derby was created by the National Hockey League's Brendan Morrison as a fundraiser for Tofino community iniatives. In it's 5th year, the Derby will welcome more than 100 anglers. A full weekend event that includes Welcome Event with Brendan Morrison, Dinner and Silent Auction on Saturday night and Prize ceremony on Sunday afternoon, plus 2 full days of fishing! The Tofino Lantern Festival is our 'signature' community event and fundraiser, drawing the young and old with an unbelievable variety of handmade lanterns. The Tofino Lantern Festival was born in 2001 & since then has grown to feature local musicians and artists and includes a 'permanent collection' of locally created West Coast lanterns. Many of these lanterns are modeled on local flora and fauna, such as mushrooms, sharks, flowers, fish, owls, banana slugs and trees, but there is also a village worth of houses, a constellation of stars, a galaxy of planets, a yard of recycling lanterns and much, much more. Event starts at 7pm-10:30pm.

The Annual Carving on the Edge Festival celebrates the work of both traditional and contemporary wood carving artists; the 10-day festival includes a fine art wood carving show, demonstrations on traditional canoe-building, Nuu-chah-nulth paddle-making, mask making, burl wood carving, tool-making, and traditional designs. Presentations by master carvers, storytelling events, and family carving workshops for all ages. All events are open to the public at no charge and a "Carving Map' is available from local businesses and visitor centres will lead festival goers to event locations.

As a region Clayoquot Sound is a great cultivator & consumer of this special bivalve. It is for this reason that for this weekend Tofino goes to great lengths to honour the humble oyster at the Clayoquot Oyster Festival.

This is the festival's 17th year so toasts will be made with oysters in hand during oyster farm tours, oyster & wine tastings, the Mermaid's Ball & of course the ever popular & decadent Oyster Gala.
