Steam Train Tours

Hop on the "3716," a restored 1912 steam locomotive train with open-air and covered cars, for a 90-minute journey to the past. Chat with costumed interpreters and listen to musicians as the train chugs through rural Summerland with views of mountains, orchards and vineyards. The train makes a stop on the 73-m/240-ft Trout Creek Bridge, which provides a perfect photo opportunity of Trout Creek Canyon and Okanagan Lake.

In Kamloops, ride the "Spirit of Kamloops" steam train to learn about the age of steam. As part of the train tour, cross the South Thompson River on a steel trestle bridge and watch masked cowboys on horseback stage a re-creation of the famous Bill Miner train robbery.

Flightseeing Tours

Air enthusiasts in Kelowna can choose between floatplanes or helicopters that offer unparalleled views of orchards, vineyards, trestles, alpine meadows and mountains. Some operators offer longer flights for a spectacular view of Kalamalka Lake near Vernon.

Take a helicopter out of Kamloops to see more than 300 lakes, hoodoos (unique rock formations) and mountain ridges. Early evening flights as the sun sets on Kamloops Lake are very popular.

Want a bird's eye view of Mount Robson, the highest peak (3,954m/12,972ft) in the Canadian Rockies? Head to Valemount for a flightseeing tour that includes Berg Glacier and Valley of a Thousand Falls.

On a boat tour around Lake Okanagan, relax and learn the region's history while passing sights such as S.S. Options range from paddlewheelers to motor boats; some cruises allow for a swimming break... but watch out for Ogopogo (a mythical creature said to reside here)!

Vernon and Kelowna Walking Tours

Self-guided sightseeing walking tours are available in many communities, and maps can be picked up at Visitor Centres.

Visit downtown Vernon to view 26 murals painted by at-risk youth as part of a community life skills program. These outdoor works of art illustrate the culture and history of the town; see them as part of a guided or self-guided tour.

In Kelowna, take a self-guided walking tour through Cultural District to learn about the city's history and to visit attractions. The tour begins with a stroll along Okanagan Lake before passing the Okanagan Heritage Museum, Kasugai Gardens and the Kelowna Art Gallery. Nearly 20 public art installations can be viewed along the way.

Driving Routes

Thompson Okanagan driving routes encompass sightseeing highlights such as heritage sites, parks, orchards, vineyards and more.

Wine enthusiasts will love the tasting opportunities of the Oliver Area Wine Tour, which includes some of the region's most well-know wineries, while the bounty (and history) of farm country can be enjoyed on the Armstrong Nature and History Route, which passes through green pastures and the Historic O'Keefe Ranch.
