Smaller local lakes, which warm up more quickly, are also nice and private for a dip. Beware though – the water here never truly warms up. Kayaking and canoeing are also popular.
Winter Activities
Terrace's snowy outdoors is just as exhilarating to explore in the winter as it is in the summer.
The local ski hill, Shames Mountain, is about a 40-minute drive from town and is famous for deep powder. The mountain averages an impressive 12m/40ft of snow a year, though it can be wet due to the proximity to the coast. The vast and very accessible backcountry is a major attraction for resident and non-resident skiers and snowboarders.
A heli-skiing operation is also nearby, as are approximately 30km/19mi of cross-country trails.
Snowmobiling, ice skating and snowshoeing are also fun here for tourists with their own equipment. Snowshoers can hit up the summer hiking trails while snowmobilers should consult staff at local retail outlets. Ice skaters can explore the local lakes if they are willing to shovel snow from the surface, or go indoors at the Terrace Arena.
After a day in the cold, visitors may want to relax in the nearby developed or undeveloped hot springs.
