Kayaking & Canoeing
Family kayaking (Dave Heath photo)
Less than an hour from Telegraph Cove, the sheltered Broughton Archipelago – BC's largest marine park – reveals itself as ocean kayaking paradise.
Welcome to an otherworldly realm of misted seas, uninhabited bays and beaches, lush temperate rainforest, Bald eagles, salmon, halibut, sea lions, bears and best of all, Orcas, minke whales and humpback whales.

Coastal Spirits
Quadra Island-based Coastal Spirits invites visitors to kayak with whales from its base camp on the Johnstone Strait. The only kayak camp on the shores of the Orca Reserve and Rubbing Beaches, it spoils guests with safari tent accommodations, real beds, beach sauna, barbecues and campfires. The initial boat journey through the Inside Passage is an eye-popper.
Ecosummer Expeditions
Based in Clearwater, Ecosummer Expeditions offers whale-watching by kayak from its Orca Camp on Johnstone Strait. Its base camp sits on a half-moon bay flanked by old-growth forest. Activities accommodate both seasoned and newbie kayakers. Participants observe and photograph whales on the surface and eavesdrop on their communications with hydrophones. Hikes and interpretive walks bolster an experience of incomparable wonder.
Broughton Archipelago Paddler's Inn
Located in Simoon Sound, 19km/30mi north east of Port McNeill, the Broughton Archipelago Paddler's Inn is just a short water taxi or float plane ride away. It's also possible to kayak across in two to three days. Embark on a week long guided adventure learning to sea kayak, and explore the wildlife-rich shorelines with the wilderness lodge as a base.
