All kinds of palates can be satisfied in Surrey. British Columbia's second-largest city offers a strong mix of chic chain restaurants and affordable ethnic eateries, along with a few fine dining establishments. Restaurants are scattered throughout Surrey, so a bite to eat is never too far away.
Surrey abounds with mainstream chain restaurants. Many provide reasonably priced West Coast fare with Asian influences, slick décor, and perky service. For restaurants of this type, as well as burgers, pasta, steaks, pancakes, and other such dishes, head to Newton Crossing, Scott Road, or shopping centres like Southpoint Exchange or Guildford Town Centre, BC's second-largest mall.
A recent addition to Surrey's dining landscape is ULounge (#10-16051 24 Ave) in the Grandview Corners shopping development. The 295-capacity venue offers a trendy downtown Vancouver vibe with big windows, white curtains around leather booths, and menu items like organic green salads and teriyaki rice bowls. With its central bar, ULounge doubles as a nightlife hotspot.
In Cloverdale, the Vault Restaurant (5764 176th St) dishes up everything from ahi tuna to tandoori chicken, and offers more than 20 martinis.
Ethnic Cuisine
With close to 110,000 South Asian residents, Surrey is a great place to feast on Indian food. Many Indian restaurants are clustered along 120th Street on the west side of Surrey, particularly between 92nd and 96th Avenue in an area dubbed the "Punjabi Market." Also, don't miss the Indian sweet shops on 128th Street between 80th and 86th Avenue. Look for Chinese eateries near Central City.
Surrey's Fine Dining
Located near Newton Crossing off the King George Highway, the Old Surrey Restaurant (13483 72 Ave) serves French-inspired cuisine with West Coast ingredients. Family-owned and operated since 1975, the restaurant features specialties like shrimp bisque soup and oven-roasted rack of lamb with Dijon mustard and herbs.
Germanic delicacies dominate at Elisabeth's Chalet (17785 No 10 Hwy). The décor at this Cloverdale institution includes traditional woodwork and flower arrangements, which complement such dishes as wiener schnitzel and Bavarian bratwurst. The menu also includes Italian and French entrees, and the wine list is extensive.
Check out the waterfront views and seafood at Pelagos Greek Restaurant (2728 O'Hara Lane) in Crescent Beach before savouring a sweet treat from one of the nearby ice cream shops.
