Summerland Farms & Markets
Deer in apple orchard, Picture BC photo
Summerland is surrounded by farms and orchards. Agricultural roots run deep with a long tradition of cattle ranching and fruit growing. A federal government agricultural research station was established in Summerland in 1914 (now the Pacific Agri-Food Research Centre) and many fruit varieties have been developed there.
Summerland remains an agricultural community and the tradition continues to evolve with vineyards joining orchards on the sunny slopes. Fresh produce is readily available in season, from markets or U-pick, and local attractions make it easy to enjoy the area's farms and orchards.
Dickinson Farm
Climb the world's tallest tripod orchard ladder for a photo op at Dickinson Farm. At over 9m/30ft, this ladder deserves its place in the Guinness Book of World Records. Walk among the cherry and pear trees, join the U-pick fun in season and turn the kids loose to play on the vintage farm tractors.

Ladder designer Dwane is always glad to talk about the history of his family farm that dates to 1912. RV camping available. Dickinson Farm is located in the Garnet Valley, about 10 minutes from downtown.
The Vinegar Works
Valentine Farm is home to a unique offshoot of the Okanagan wine industry, the Vinegar Works. The tasting bar works just like a wine tasting: swirl, sniff and sip. Red and white wine vinegars, fruit infused and tarragon vinegars, ingredients are all grown on the farm and they're all organic. Take a self-guided tour and meet "the girls," very happy laying hens who have the run of the farm, and the "manure machines," horses and a llama grazing in the pasture. Stroll among the grape vines, both vinifera (for the vinegar) and table varieties. A special riparian area that shelters the endangered spadefoot toad, birds and small mammals has been set aside as a nature reserve. Accommodation is available in the guesthouse. Valentine Farm is located less than a five-minute drive from downtown Summerland.
Summerland Sweets
Summerland Sweets (6202 Canyon View Drive) produces jelly candies, jams, jellies and syrups from fresh-picked fruit. The company was founded in 1962 by Ted Atkinson who served as head of the food processing lab at the Federal Agricultural Research Station in Summerland for many years. Expertise gained from that experience eventually turned into this commercial operation still run by the family today. See work in progress, browse for edibles and gifts and sample Giant's Head fruit wines in the tasting room. Open year round.
Farm Markets
The Summerland Farmer's Market presents products from local vendors on Tuesday mornings, April to October, in Memorial Park downtown. Find produce, preserves and home baked goods at farm fruit stands like Blossom Fruit Stand. Roadside fruit stands include Granny's, Roberts Fruit Stand and Big Mac's Country Market. Check with the Visitor Centre on Highway 97 for seasonal opening times.
