Kayaking & Canoeing
Family kayaking (Dave Heath photo)
Sheltered waters, a peppering of islands, hidden coves, idyllic beaches and easily accessible marine parks invite paddlers to adventure around Sidney.
Island campsites for kayakers enable overnight expeditions. Bald eagles, sea lions and sea otters watch from the cheap seats.
Island Kayaking
Sign on for guided, multi-day expeditions through islands and marine parks. D'Arcy Island was a leper colony when the disease arrived in Victoria in 1891. Princess Margaret has three wilderness campsites with toilet facilities and hiking trails.
Rum Island, in the 1920s a base for rum-runners, is another excellent overnight spot for kayakers. It has three campsites, picnic tables, pit toilets and a network of trails.

Kayak Tours
Easy Paddling
Feisty Paddle in the Park, operated by Marsha Moore and Melissa Hailey, focuses on local tours and variety to the max. Kayaks launch direct from the dock, so no grumbling about wet feet. The Inner Beauty tour is a gentle, two-hour paddle around the protected waters of nearby Tsehum Harbour. It takes in hidden coves, sheltered beaches, Harbour seals, mink, raccoons, Bald eagles, herons and seabirds. For the whole family including small children.
The sunset tour brings silky rippled waters, the Mt Baker snowcap turning the color of peaches and a glorious Pacific sunset. For all levels of kayakers.
Beginner and Intermediate Kayaking
The half-day tour out of Sidney takes in Lewis Bay on Coal Island - a popular spot for Harbour seals - Musclow Islet, kelp gardens and occasional shell middens, archeological remnants of ancient First Nations villages.
Intermediate Paddling
The full-day tour extends to more distant islands for expanded wildlife and photography opportunities. It lasts between 6 and 7.5 hours.
Sidney's SeaQuest Adventures also offers several-hour and multi-day guided tours in single and double kayaks. The emphasis falls on scenic beauty and wildlife. May through Aug, it offers in-ocean kayak lessons including self-rescue techniques. Advance reservations are necessary for the busy summer season.
Kayak Rentals
Paddle in the Park rents single and double kayaks to knowledgeable, experienced paddlers. SeaQuest Adventures rents singles to seasoned paddlers in summer and winter rentals by pre-arranged reservations.
