Hiking

With its exquisite seaside setting, flat terrain, forest and farmlands, Sidney's a natural for gentle, scenic hiking.
Easy Hiking
Straight From Town
Sidney's 2km/1.24mi waterfront promenade may not tax too much, but is, without question, the loveliest hike in town. The passing panorama includes Sidney's band shell, which may be in the midst of a summer concert; snow-capped Mount Baker across the Salish Sea; that bronze chappie on the park bench; and the Port Sidney Marina.
Lochside Trail
Accessible straight from town, the 29km/18mi Lochside Trail crosses the Saanich Peninsula and connects to the Galloping Goose segment of the Trans Canada Trail. The Lochside Walkway with its beautiful ocean views also begins in Sidney.

Reay Creek Trails
Hikers may also want to follow the ultra-scenic Reay Creek trails, which take in a salmon stream, views of the Saanich Peninsula at Horth Hill, the hilltop panorama from John Dean Provincial Park and the dunes and salt marsh of Island View Beach Regional Park.
Sidney Spit, Gulf Islands National Park Reserve
Catch the ferry for the 25-minute cruise to Sidney Spit, part of the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve. Bring a camera for Orca whales, Dall's porpoises and Harbour seals. Welcome to 400 ha/988.4ac of white sand beaches, towering bluffs, tidal flats and salt marshes.
Hike to the saltwater lagoon - a federally-recognized Important Bird Area - to watch the wide variety of bird species that stop here to feed during their migration.
Easy to Intermediate Hiking
The Galloping Goose
The 55km/38mi Galloping Goose Trail runs from Victoria to Sooke along a former railway line. Hikers and bikers on parallel paths follow it through urban, rural and wilderness landscapes. Walkers usually choose a scenic segment for a day hike, depending on what appeals: Will that be hidden coves, glimmering lakes, marshlands, canyons, swamplands or majestic forests of Douglas fir, Garry oaks and arbutus?
