Wineries & Vineyards
Grapes on a vine (Andrea Johnson photo)
Flanked by the fertile soil and benign climate of the Saanich Peninsula, Sidney lies within easy reach of four wineries and a ciderhouse.
A self-guided ramble through the vineyards, wineries and tasting counters makes for a day of exhilarating, Epicurean discovery. In all cases, be sure to check opening hours in advance.
Church & State Wines
The 2009 All-Canadian Wine Championships awarded Best Red Wine of the Year to Church & State Wines. Its 2006 Quintessential was the champion wine. This was a towering national victory for the largest and most awarded - 80 awards from internationally recognized wine competitions - of Vancouver Island's 30 or so wineries.
Taste Award-Winners
Drop into the Saanich Peninsula Winery and discovery what makes judges and critics so happy. Work through the vineyard's award-winning varietals - from Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay to Syrah, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Merlots - at the tasting bar. Fri to Sun, come by for lunch overlooking the vineyards.

Muse Winery
Minutes from Victoria International Airport and Swartz Bay and practically on Sidney's doorstep, sample and purchase limited release wines at Muse Winery. The boutique winery produces 11 labels from zesty Pinot Gris to a rip-snorting Syrah. Through summer, Bistro Muse offers light lunches and wine and food pairings in the vineyard setting.
Starling Lane Winery
Starling Lane Winery is a collaborative effort involving three Saanich Peninsula families and three vineyards. In the pastoral setting of Saanich farmlands and rolling hills, the vest-pocket-sized winery produces whites, reds and the wonderfully named Melange a Trois rose. It's won awards for Ortega, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Marechal Foch, Pinot Noir and its Port Victoria Wild Blackberry dessert wine. Not bad for a little guy, eh?
Marley Farm Winery
A family vineyard in the nearby Mount Newton Valley, Marley Farm Winery produces Pinot Grigio and Pinot Noir, but it's most known for its fruit wines. Drop in and peruse a lineup that includes from kiwi fruit, raspberry, strawberry, loganberry, blackberry, elderflower, rhubarb, quince and others. Who could have imagined?
Sea Cider Farm & Ciderhouse
For something a little different, visit Sea Cider Farm & Ciderhouse's award-winning organic orchard and ciderhouse on the Saanich Peninsula. Pay a visit to the lofty tasting room for samples of nine different ciders: Pippins is a Prohibition-style powerhouse. Rumrunner comes aged in rum-soaked bourbon barrels. Pomona, from frozen crab apples, recalls a late-harvest-style wine.
The ciders go the distance from dry to sweet, some of them alternatives to table wine. Pair them with platters of artisan cheeses and cured meats available on-site and call it lunch.
For more information on local wineries and vineyards, drop into the Sidney Visitor Centre at 10382 Pat Bay Hwy, just 2 minutes from the Swartz Bay Ferry Terminal.

True to the traditional 'Garagiste Movement', Dragonfly Hill creates limited-production wines with a local, sustainable mindset. We have some of the oldest vines on Vancouver Island, including Ortega, Pinot Auxerrois, Schoenberger & Labelle, grown using organic farming methods, which make our wines so special.
