Gardens
Flowers
A gentle climate with plenty of rain and sunshine renders Sidney and the Saanich Peninsula Canada's best location for gardens.
At world-renowned Butchart Gardens and Butterfly Gardens, be immersed in masterworks of manicured and natural beauty.
Butchart Gardens
Butchart Gardens is a household name not only in Canada, but around the world. Tourists from all over the planet scramble to see it. Unveiled in 1908, this National Historic Site has closed only three times in its long history, once to entertain the King and Queen of Siam.
Butchart's Sunken Gardens
The owners took an abandoned limestone quarry and transformed it into the Sunken Gardens, literally a landmark in Canadian gardening. Italian, Japanese and Mediterranean Gardens transport garden lovers through the flowers and foliage of faraway cultures.

Concerts, Christmas & Fireworks
Its 22ha/55ac gardens embrace all four seasons. But Christmas ranks as a 5th season. Gardens dress up in lights and decorations. Twelve Days of Christmas displays tell the traditional tale. Ice skaters whirl around the rink to the ring of Christmas carols. Some prefer this wintery wonder even to the knock 'em dead outdoor concerts and fabulous fireworks that hallmark a Butchart summer.
Butchart Dining
Three restaurants from coffee shop to fine dining room sate the appetites of blissed-out trudgers. The kitchen offers dinner in summer and at Christmas. Will that be the local Sooke trout or succulent free-range chicken from the Cowichon Valley? Afternoon tea, served daily at 4pm, is a treat in this sumptuous garden atmosphere.
Butterfly Gardens
Only five minutes from Butchart Gardens, the Saanich Peninsula's Butterfly Gardens presents another must-do attraction. Welcome to the tropical rainforest. Fill the eyes with tropical foliage and flowers, exotic koi in jungled streams, pink flamingos, Amazon parrots in the treetops and of course, the amazing butterflies.
Hundreds of butterflies representing 50 species flutter through this airy, sun-dappled tropical forest environment. Spot exquisite targets through the camera viewfinder.
Butterfly Metamorphosis
What's more, witness the miraculous process of metamorphosis. Look for tiny butterfly eggs on the gardens' host plants. Watch infant butterflies actually emerge from chrysalides. Wonder at the vast diversity of sizes, shapes, colors and patterns of butterflies and moths.
Glendale Gardens
It doesn't pretend to compete with Butchart, but the 4.1ha/9ac landscaped Glendale Gardens, maintained by students of the Pacific Horticultural College, hold their own as a destination for garden lovers. The Herb Garden, Takata Japanese Garden, Mediterranean Garden and Children's Garden are must-sees.
