Seeking sandy beaches, great hiking, fast-flowing rapids or quiet campsites in the Sechelt area?
The evergreen Sunshine Coast offers a bit of everything for outdoorsy types at its numerous provincial parks, regional parks, city parks, and marine parks.
Porpoise Bay Provincial Park
Porpoise Bay Provincial Park is the closest provincial park to Sechelt, directly north of town. Next to the forested bay at the south end of Sechelt Inlet, there's a campground with 84 sites, plus toilets and hot showers. Another campground designated for cyclists offers 40 more sites. Kayaking is popular here, as well as wildlife viewing.
Spipiyus Provincial Park
Nature lovers will appreciate Spipiyus Provincial Park, the oldest closed-canopy forest in Canada. The 3,000ha/7,413ac park is located in the Caren Range Mountains, and nearly one-third of it is ancient forest. Spipiyus Provincial Park offers habitat for a rare bird species, the marbled murrelet. Hike along old logging roads to Mount Hallowell, the site of a rare restored fire tower. The park is 11km/6.8mi north of Sechelt on Highway 101.

Skookumchick Narrows Provincial Park
Another must-see provincial park is Skookumchuck Narrows Provincial Park, located 51km/32mi north of Sechelt near the village of Egmont. Connecting Sechelt and Jervis Inlets, the narrow's spectacular tidal rapids can flow faster than 30kph/18.6mph, burgeoning with whitewater and whirlpools.
Roberts Creek Provincial Park
Roberts Creek Provincial Park lies a short drive south on Highway 101 from Sechelt. At this 40ha/99ac park, full-service camping is available from mid-June to mid-September at 21 vehicle-accessible, forest-enclosed sites. Stroll the ocean beach and watch out for whales and seals, as well as mussels, oysters, and sea stars. Swimming, tidal fishing for salmon and cod (with a license), and picnicking are among the other options.
Regional and City Parks
In Sechelt itself, Hackett Park offers a picnicking area and playground for kids, while the Davis Bay waterfront is a popular scenic beach. Located next to the Roberts Creek Golf Course, Cliff Gilker Regional Park abounds with hiking trails and also has a children's play area. Dakota Ridge Winter Recreation Area lies north of both Gibsons and Sechelt, and offers 12km/7.5mi of groomed cross-country skiing trails, as well as snowshoeing trails. The area is accessible via a four-wheel drive winter access road (chains required).
Marine Parks
Smuggler's Cove Marine Park is located about 16km/9.9mi north of Sechelt off Highway 101. Here, visitors can stroll over boardwalks on marshes or hike on ocean bluffs, admiring ducklings and blackbirds in the woods. Further north on Highway 101 near Madeira Park, is Francis Point Marine Park. The 80ha/198ac park has a pristine waterfront with tremendous diving, plus diverse plant life. To get there, take Francis Peninsula Road from Highway 101 and turn left on Merrill Road.

This park provides trails & viewing areas for visitors wishing to experience the awesome power of incredibly turbulent tidal rapids. On a 3 metre tide, 200 billion gallons of water flow through the narrows connecting Sechelt & Jervis Inlet. This is a great location for hiking, kayaking & canoeing.
