Whale Watching

The waters around Saturna Island are home to several pods of resident Orcas (killer whales), as well as occasional grey, minke and humpback whales.
The best way to see whales is from a guided whale-watching tour, but there are several viewpoints around the island that offer a good chance for whale and wildlife sightings.
Whale-Watching Tours
Discovery Sea Tours offers guided whale-watching trips departing from Lyall Harbour on Saturna Island. Watch for Orcas and other marine life while cruising the waters of the Gulf Islands and San Juan Islands on a high-speed Zodiac with both covered and outside seating. The company also offers wildlife-viewing and sightseeing trips that include beach landings to scenic, rarely-visited locations in Gulf Island National Park Reserve. Whale-watching, sightseeing and wildlife-viewing trips typically last three hours.

Sighting an Orca from shore is a rare treat for lifelong residents of the west coast, let alone visitors here for just a week or two. While these exquisite marine mammals offer no guarantees, there's a marginally good chance that they'll reward patient observers with a flash of muscular black-and-white torso at East Point Park. The area's three resident pods are drawn to Boiling Reef for its nutrient-rich marine life – definitely so when the salmon are running in the fall.
Whale watching on Vancouver Island is a popular activity; for more information on whales, tours and locations visit Vancouver Island whale watching or Victoria whale watching.
