With Rossland's location, it's no wonder that the hiking opportunities in and around the city are so impressive.
There are plenty of leisurely and peaceful strolls for the casual day hiker. For more experienced adventurers who crave a challenge under often sunny skies, Rossland has plenty of demanding scrambles and breathtaking views. Backcountry hiking can start as early as May, with some lower trails opening earlier. Trails are typically open until late fall.
Highlight Trails
Today's trails owe a lot to Rossland's gold mining history. Back in the late 1800s, the mountains were covered with wagon roads and railway beds. These historic routes are now being used in part by the hard-working and dedicated local Kootenay Columbia Trails Society, who've adapted the trails to make today's network. With 32 trails covering 170km/106mi, the selection here is vast. Boots in Rossland were made for walking!

The Centennial Trail
This is the starting point for the three most popular trails located in the mountains just north of the city. The excellent and well-marked routes here are best for walking, hiking, and jogging, and the trails wind through the forested mountains.
Star Gulch Reservoir Loop
SG provides a great introduction to the area's trails and is perfect for families, dog walkers and joggers of all ages. Rated easy, it's a 4km/2.5mi trail with an estimated walking time of 1-1.5 hours return.
Red Mountain Trail
This routes climbs up the western slopes of the iconic mountain at a moderate angle. Hikers are rewarded with spectacular views and one of the best outlooks in the area. Watch for edible huckleberries along the trail; they're small berries, usually red or dark purple, and about 5mm in diameter. For safety's sake, check with a local before eating. The 5km/3mi trail is rated intermediate, with an estimated walking time of 2-3 hours return.
The Kootenay Columbia Mountain Trail
Named for the enthusiastic group that maintains many of the area's trails, this route provides majestic, panoramic views of Rossland and Trail from the peaks of the Rossland Range. The moderately angled, 4km/2.5mi trail is rated intermediate, with an estimated walking time of 1-1.5 hours return.
For detailed information on trails, including maps, visit the Kootenay Columbia Trails Society online. Maps are also available at the Rossland Visitor Centre and local retailers. The non-motorized, multi-use trails are well marked with appropriate signage. Beware of wildlife, as bears are sometimes seen in the area and Rossland trails are in the wilderness. Exercise appropriate wilderness and backcountry hiking caution and be aware of local regulations and warnings.
