Norman Armour - Mapping a City

For over ten years, Vancouver's PuSh International Performing Arts Festival has been presenting & animating contemporary works for the stage & public spaces that explore & reflect upon civic history & identity. Innovative, trend-setting, provocative, experiential & thought-provoking are words commonly used to describe a 'PuSh show.' The festival's artistic & executive director, Norman Armour, will survey a group of stand-out projects to show how the arts, & in particular festivals, can be a central player in expressing & shaping a city's evolving sense of itself. This talk will be preceded by a short musical performance by Veda Hille.

Johanna Hurme - Architecture Against Ambivalence

According to Johanna Hurme, we cannot afford to litter our world with mediocre & disposable architecture. We need to recognize that the difference between the good & the bad is long-term vision, intelligence & care, not the price tag. By presenting a series of case studies, projects & processes, Johanna will demonstrate how design can provide answers to problems far greater than the task at hand, & how by thinking beyond the ordinary we all can help create an undeniably better world. This talk will be preceded by a short performance by flamenco guitarist, Baraa Safaa.
