For history buffs, Richmond has several intriguing museums that showcase this island municipality's diverse cultures and heritage.
Richmond Museum
Located in Minoru Park in the Richmond Cultural Centre, the Richmond Museum (7700 Minoru Gate) offers rotating exhibits covering such aspects of local history as the Interurban tram line, archeological digs, cranberry farming, and the Scandinavian community at Finn Slough. There are plenty of vintage photos to admire. It's open from 9am to 9:30pm from Monday to Friday, and 10am to 5pm on Saturday and Sunday.
Another highlight in the Richmond Cultural Centre is the Richmond Art Gallery. Check out cutting-edge, contemporary works by local visual artists such as Ingrid Koenig and Diyan Achjadi.

Steveston Museum
At the Steveston Museum (3811 Moncton St.), visitors get an authentic taste of early 20th-century life in this historic fishing village in southwest Richmond. Hours are 9:30am to 1pm and 1:30pm to 5pm, Monday through Saturday.
The museum is housed in what was Steveston's first bank building circa 1905. The two-story red house includes the restored bank manager's office, a general store display, and living quarters for bank staff upstairs. There is a working post office on site, and self-guided walking tour brochures for Steveston are available.
Other Living Museums
The Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site (12138 Fourth Ave.) showcases the roots of Steveston's salmon canning industry. Watch films on the fishing industry, check out a salmon canning line and more.
Also in Steveston, Britannia Shipyard National Historic Site (5180 Britannia Drive) is the oldest shipyard community in British Columbia, operating until 1979.
The London Heritage Farm (6511 Dyke Road) centers on a picturesque, 19th-century farmhouse, where visitors can enjoy homebaked scones and fresh-brewed tea at an affordable price after inspecting the bee hives, chickens and fruit trees.
