Qualicum Beach is tucked into the curving south-central flank of Vancouver Island's eastern coast.
The town is 36km/22mi northwest of Nanaimo and requires approximately two hours of highway drive time from Victoria. The compact town centre sits atop a plateau overlooking the choppy blue-gray waters of the Strait of Georgia.
The postcard views take in nearby Lasqueti Island, the Sunshine Coast off the mainland of British Columbia and, rising in the far distance, the coastal mountain range.
Mount Arrowsmith Biosphere Reserve
Turning inland, the views are dominated by Mount Arrowsmith and a series of smaller peaks in the Beaufort Range, a subsection of the rocky spine that runs the length of Vancouver Island.

At 1,817m/5,960ft, Arrowsmith is the highest peak on southern Vancouver Island. It's the crowning point of the Mount Arrowsmith UNESCO Biosphere Reserve – one of 13 such reserves in Canada and one of two that are west of the Rockies mountain range. (The other is Clayoquot Sound, directly across these mountains on Vancouver Island's west coast).
The largely forested Arrowsmith biosphere stretches for 793 sq km/306sq mi down the steep mountainside to encompass the Little Qualicum River, French Creek and Englishman River watersheds. The towns of Qualicum Beach and Parksville are also part of the reserve, as is 400sq km/154sq mi of ocean extending out into the Strait of Georgia.
Qualicum Beach Climate and Weather
Qualicum Beach enjoys a mild year-round climate. Even in t-shirt weather, however, it's wise to pack a sweater for chilly evenings by the ocean.
Arrowsmith and the mountains typically shelter Qualicum Beach from the wilder weather found on the island's west coast. The result is a microclimate marked by an above-average amount of blue-sky weather (2,407 annual hours of sun). Rainy winters are the norm with temperatures averaging 4°C. The area gets approximately 95cm/37in of precipitation annually – a third less than Vancouver. Some summer days can be hot, though the average temperature in July is a moderate 23.5°C/74°F.
