Biking

For both recreational and hardcore cyclists, mountain biking is one of Powell River's bonafide attractions.
Whether circling lakes, zooming through forests, bouncing along logging roads, or taking a roadside spin on Highway 101, the excitement is endless on the upper Sunshine Coast.
Sunshine Coast Trail
Since 1992, the Sunshine Coast Trail has offered a challenging 180km/111mi odyssey from Desolation Sound in the north to Jervis Inlet in the south. Admire waterfalls, watch out for deer and eagles, and traverse old railroad grades and bridges en route.
Make this route into a multi-day trip with camping or B&B stopovers, or simply ride different trail sections starting at key access points. For suggestions, pick up the official recreation map for the upper Sunshine Coast at the Powell River Visitor Centre.

Inland Lake Provincial Park
For a relaxing ride just north of Powell River, check out the 13km/8mi loop in Inland Lake Provincial Park. The wide limestone path is so flat that the entire circuit is wheelchair-accessible. It's also a great option for family biking excursions. Picnicking and fishing spots abound.
Bunster Hills Loop
Ready to put in between four and six hours of biking and tone those (ahem) bunsters? Located near Lund, the Bunster Hill Loop kicks off along Wilde Road on the north side of Highway 101. Overlooking the serene waters of Okeover Inlet, this renowned trail features a 750m/2460ft climb through the open 12km/7.5mi, but pleasantly finishes up with a 22km/14mi descent.
Savary Island
Savary Island has been dubbed the "Hawaii of the North" due to its white sandy beaches. One great way to experience the scenery is by bike. Head to Lund, catch a water taxi over to Savary Island and rent a mountain bike from suppliers such as Rigger's Pub Style Restaurant. Featuring unpaved roads and walking paths, the Savary Island terrain is easy to navigate apart from some small hills. Stop to check out the sand dollars and crabs on the beaches.
Bike Rentals, Sales, and More
For rentals, repairs, and sales of top-of-the-line bikes by Norco and Kona, head to one of Powell River's quality bike shops. These include Taw's Cycle and Sports and Suncoast Cycles, both of which have operated for more than 20 years.
Get in touch with Powell River's Wild Women Cycling Club, which was founded by Leta Burechailo. Year-round group rides enable women, mostly between ages 25 and 50, to explore local trails together.
Drop by the Powell River Visitor Centre for more information about mountain biking in the area.
