Whales congregate in the waters around Port Hardy, which provides visitors with excellent whale-watching opportunities.
The nutrient-rich waters of northern Vancouver Island attract Orcas (killer whales), humpback, grey, and minke whales as well as an abundance of other marine life such as harbour seals, sea lions, Pacific white-sided dolphins and Dall’s porpoises.
Getting out on the water via a water taxi, kayak or fishing/diving charter is one sure way to meet some of the north island's remarkable amphibious residents. Pods of Orcas circulate in Queen Charlotte Sound, flashing their black and white torsos while spyhopping across the waves.

Whale-Watching Tours
A guided ocean kayak tour is an excellent way to view whales. Local companies offer whale-watching kayak tours of Queen Charlotte Sound, Johnstone Strait and Blackfish Sound, where approximately 200 Orcas reside between July and October. Whale-watching tours can also be booked from nearby communities like Alert Bay, Port McNeill and Telegraph Cove.
