Ripples, shards, and large patches of aqua blue can be found on maps of the Port Alberni region.
Well known for its stellar fishing, Port Alberni’s marine and water-based activities are a major-league draw in an area that encompasses the Alberni Inlet, Sproat and Great Central lakes, and the Stamp and Somass rivers.
Boating
Pleasure boats cruise the inlet and tie up at marinas along the route. Options include China Creek Marina west of town, the downtown Harbour Quay Marina, Fisherman's Harbour, and Clutesi Haven Marina at the entrance to the Somass River.
Kayaking
Barkley Sound and the Broken Group Islands is renowned as one of the finest kayaking regions in the world, and Port Alberni is where many paddlers get their oars wet. Rent kayaks from Alberni Outpost or the operators of the MV Frances Barkley, a 1950s-era freighter that carries mail, cargo, kayakers, and sightseers to outposts along the Alberni Inlet as far as the seaside village of Bamfield.

Batstar Adventure Tours specializes in gourmet sea kayaking daytrips and longer outings (up to 10 days) to Clayoquot Sound, Pacific Rim National Park Reserve, and other west coast destinations. The outfit (whose office and café are across the road from the Clutesi Marina) was voted one of the best adventure travel companies in the world by National Geographic readers.
Swimming
Take a dip in the dauntingly cold ocean or enjoy considerably warmer river and lake swims. Paper Mill Dam Park is a popular spot with its changing rooms and sun-heated rocks. The Port Alberni Visitor Centre can point the way to good swimming holes along the Somass and Stamp rivers (including one across from Naesgaard's Farm Market).
Family groups enjoy wading into Sproat Lake from its namesake provincial park 15 minutes northwest of town. The best bet for all-season swimming? The modern pool, sauna, and whirlpool complex at the Echo Aquatic & Fitness Centre.
Other Water Activities
Race down the Alberni Inlet in the high-powered speedboats operated by Kiwi Jetboat Adventures. Float merrily downstream on inner tube excursions with Stamp River Tubing. Rent a houseboat and meander lazily around Sproat Lake for days or even weeks at a time.
Ride the summer thermals while windsurfing at China Creek. Grab hold of a taut nylon line for waterskiing and wakeboarding fun. Or simply dabble toes in cool water on a blistering hot summer afternoon.
For more information about water activities in the Port Alberni area check with the Visitor Centre.
