Hiking

A vast array of hiking trails – forest, riverside and near-vertical – are scattered throughout the Alberni Valley. Pick up maps and trail guides at the Visitor Centre.
Sign up for a group hike with the Alberni Valley Outdoor Club. Join the entertaining Sandy McRuer, a local forester and naturalist with Rainbird Excursions, on a variety of day hikes. He does the driving and guiding while delivering expert colour commentary.
Favourite spots in addition to the popular routes listed below include the China Creek Trail, Horne Lake Trail, Labour Day Lake Trail and the Kitsuksis Dyke. Enjoy an easy boardwalk stroll through Cathedral Grove's old-growth forest or go for the calf burn when grinding up the slopes of Mount Arrowsmith.
Log Train Trail
Log Train Trail is a flat scenic 25km/15mi hiking, cycling and horseback-riding route, which follows the bed of an abandoned 1920s-era railway branch line at the foot of the Beaufort Range.

It once linked a sawmill owned by timber giant H.R. McMillan to Port Alberni's industrial waterfront. Access its start point via the equestrian trail at Mozart Road north of town.
Stamp Long River Trail
Hugging the east bank of the Stamp River in the provincial park of the same name, the Stamp Long River Trail (7.5km/5mi) is highlighted by stretches of moss-covered old-growth firs and cedars. The changing seasons dictate the pace of the river as well as the wildflower (spring) and black bear (fall) counts.
Rogers Creek Nature Trail
Rogers Creek Nature Trail is an easy 3km/1.8mi riverside path five minutes south of the Visitor Centre off the Port Alberni Highway (#4). It makes for a good, two-hour leg stretch for travellers and their dogs. The creek is named for Albert Bowman Rogers, the American surveyor who mapped the area in the 1880s on behalf of the Canadian Pacific Railway.
Mount Arrowsmith
Serious hikers can select a variety of routes into Mount Arrowsmith Park. The historic 1912 Canadian Pacific Railways trail (a tough, eight-hour roundtrip) begins across Highway 4 from the Cameron Lake day-use area. The Judge's Route is best for those striking out for Arrowsmith's summit. Alpine meadows, blazing with wildflowers in the summer, can also be reached via the Saddle Route, which climbs 450m/1476ft to see-forever views of the Gulf Islands.
Port Alberni Walking Tours
The Alberni Valley Museum's free walking-tour guides of the north, central and south quadrants of Port Alberni are available at the Visitor Centre. The Southport tour is rich in history and significance. It begins at the Harbour Quay at the foot of Argyle Street (site of the original port town of Stamp Harbour) and cruises past the restored Banfield Lifeboat (a relic of heroic lifesaving activities on the wild west coast), the 1911 railway station, Fisherman's Wharf and notable civic buildings.
Stop by the Port Alberni Visitor Centre for more information about hiking trails in the area.
