Vancouver Island is renowned for its mountain biking circuits, and there are some long, winding, sometimes ultra-challenging routes for all skill levels in the Port Alberni area.
The first race in the annual Island Cup series of cross-country marathons is held here in March. Also, many vacationing enthusiasts ride this area as part of multi-stop itineraries that include such regional hotspots as Parksville's Top Bridge Mountain Bike Park and the Comox Valley's Mount Washington.
Mountain Biking Trails
The first and best route for cyclists here is the Log Train Trail, a flat hiking route that follows an old rail line into the Alberni Valley. Casual riders can follow a simple there-and-back route. The adventuresome can head off the main route into what's known as the "Candy Store" network of trails.

Take it uphill for the tough slogging on the aptly named "Gut Wrencher," "Purgatory," and "Evil" trails. Or stay closer to sea level with the "Bones" and "Citizen Climb" routes.
Other biking trails can be accessed off Highway #4 east of town at the Loon Lake parking lot. These routes head north and south of the highway in the vicinity of Rogers Creek and Stokes Creek.
Where to Begin
Check into the Visitor Centre for mountain biking tips, or visit one of Port Alberni's handful of bike shops. The pros at Ozzie's Sport 'n Cycle (4039 Redford) and Cutting Edge Sports (4610 Elizabeth) are experts when it comes to local trails and conditions. Bikes, accessories, and other essential gear are available.
Groups of bikers often meet for social rides in the parking lot of the Coombs Country Candy Store just east of the Visitor Centre on Sunday mornings. Check in at Ozzie's for info on group road rides during the summer.
