Climbing & Caving
Rock climbing (Don Weixl photo)
Penticton hosts rock climbers from around the world eager to tackle the Skaha Bluffs.
This series of cliffs that range up to 80m/250ft in height, present more than 650 routes, with challenges suitable for beginner to advanced climbers.
Skaha Bluffs is the second-most popular climbing destination in BC (after the Smoke Bluffs in Squamish). Easily accessible, just beyond the Penticton city limits on the east side of Skaha Lake, the area also offers many hiking trails. Both climbers and hikers are rewarded with terrific views of Penticton, Skaha Lake and the Okanagan Valley.
Difficulty Rating
Skaha Bluffs' climbing routes vary in difficulty from 5.4 to 5.13 on the Yosemite Decimal System (the North American rating scale). The majority of routes are in the 5.8 to 5.12 range and some of these are bolted throughout for sport climbing.

Sport & Trad Climbing
The area has a reputation as a sport climbing destination and Skaha Bluffs does offer ideal terrain for beginners and intermediate climbers. But about half the routes are not bolted, leaving plenty of opportunity for those with advanced skills to tackle traditional climbs.
Type of Terrain
The Skaha Bluffs are composed of coarse-grained gneiss, providing excellent friction. Since the area is so popular, little loose rock remains on well-used routes, although climbers should always be cautious. While most of the climbs are on slabs or thin faces, other routes include cracks, corners and steep overhangs. The Great White Wall and the Doctor's Wall offer vertical and overhanging cliffs.
Best Time to Climb
The Skaha Bluffs are located on a series of north-south canyons, providing opportunities to stay in the shade during the blistering Okanagan summer. Climbing early in the day is another good strategy. While it's possible to climb the bluffs year-round, March to October is considered the best period.
Skaha Rock Adventures
Skaha Rock Adventures guides groups or individuals for rock climbing sessions in the area. It can be a great time-saver since the local instructors can direct climbers straight to the appropriate route. They also provide technical training courses for all levels and abilities.
How to Get There
Follow Eastside Road south from Penticton along the shoreline of Skaha Lake. The access road to Skaha Bluffs is 2km/1.2mi south of Skaha Marina. Turn east at Smythe Road. There is a short section of gravel road, then paved road the rest of the way to the parking area and trailhead. Parking is free. The road is very narrow with sharp twists and turns. Drive cautiously. From the parking lot, the climbing area is a 10-15 minute hike.
Practical Points
- Beginners should consider basic climbing and belaying instruction in the safe and controlled environment of indoor climbing walls and seek instruction until they are confident and able to attack more challenging routes.
- All climbers and mountaineers - regardless of their level of expertise - must thoroughly investigate, and have a good understanding of all gear, safety and weather-related (eg avalanche safety) requirements prior to setting out on any outdoor excursion of this nature.
- In order to avoid injury, get advice from local guides, clubs or associations before venturing out.
- Staff at the Penticton Visitor Centre, located at the corner of Eckhardt Avenue and Highway 97, can provide information on local rock climbing instruction and guiding services.
