Park in BC (JF Bergeron photo)
Second only to Saturna Island, Pender boasts the largest amount of green space in the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve of Canada.
Brochures are available at the Parks Canada office in Hope Bay. Park guides lead kid-friendly interpretive programs each weekend from mid-June to early-September.
In addition to this parkland, there are numerous other public hiking trails throughout North and South Pender. Many are maintained by the Pender Island Conservancy Association through volunteer beach clean-ups and broom clearances. The Pender Island Parks Commission's Community Parks Guide is available at local retailers. Richard Fox's The Pender Islands Handbook also features a detailed guide to local routes.
South Pender Island
Vanish into a storybook woodland glade at Enchanted Forest Park (Spalding Road on the way to Poets Cove). Interpretive signs describing the resident ferns and plants line the flat, 20-minute path leading to ocean views, a grotto, and seasonal waterfall.
