Year-round angling opportunities make Pemberton a fishing paradise with its wide range of species, spectacular settings and variety of angling styles and tackle.
In spring, there's coastal cutthroat trout, bull and rainbow trout, Dolly Varden and Rocky Mountain Whitefish. In summer, catches include sockeye and chum salmon which leads into spectacular runs of Coho salmon in the Fall.
Tackle, Licenses & Local Tips
Spud Valley Sporting Goods has been Pemberton's primary outfitter for four season outdoor activities since 1977; it carries reams of information, expertise and outdoor gear for fishing, camping and hiking. Here's where to get the up-to-date scoop on licenses, current regulations and closures as well as which fish are biting where, and on what lures – the store stocks in excess of 50,000 flies. Spud Valley does not, however, offer or recommend any guiding services.

Where to Fish around Pemberton
With so many quality waters, recommendations might vary but top choices usually include Lillooet Lake, Birkenhead River and Andersen Lake, a large lake with plenty of rainbow trout and Dolly Varden.
Birkenhead River
The beautiful Birkenhead River is also known for its large trout, with rainbow and Dolly Varden milling about with some cutthroat. Note that some sections may close for spawning salmon, usually mid August to mid September depending on the expected fish returns. Birkenhead Lake also has decent sized trout.
Lillooet River Tributaries
The tributaries of the Lillooet River drainage system, which includes the Birkenhead River (even in winter), Green River, Lower and Upper Lillooet Rivers are all excellent waters, as are many feeder streams.
Fly Fishing Spots
In addition, fly fishers can head to Mosquito Lake, Gates Lake, Blackwater Lake and the Joffre Lakes as well as less accessible alpine lakes including Tenquille, Ogre, Owl, Fowl, Chain and Ivey Lake. Colder temperatures here mean that most fish are on the small size, however the largesse of the scenery more than makes up for that.
Spawning Salmon
In late August and early September, salmon that have made their way up the Fraser, Harrison and Lillooet Rivers reach the Birkenhead River. The sockeye run can be so spectacular that the river turns red with them. There are numerous viewing points along Hwy 99 as it passes through rural Mount Curie as well as along the D'Arcy-Anderson Lake Road.
Fee Creek is a spawning channel along Hwy 99. There is a parking area at 10.7km/6/6mi from the road junction in Mount Currie; look for binocular logo signs to mark viewing locations.
