Guest Ranches & Horseback Riding
Horseback riding (Albert Normandin photo)
Pemberton boasts having more horses per capita than any other area in British Columbia. Considering the scenery, it's little wonder why.
Trails weave into the mountains and rainforests, valley meadows, beside rivers and up to glacial lakes. And catering to novice or experienced rider, guided rides range from one hour to multi-day expeditions into the backcountry.
Pemberton Stables
Located just 2km/1.2mi from downtown Pemberton, riders can choose from three different tours, including pony rides for children. One and two-hour rides depart three times a day and are very family oriented through open meadows and forested trails. There is no pavement riding from Pemberton Stables.
Longer rides climb through lush forest trails to 305m/1,000ft over the Pemberton Valley – cameras are a must, and include a hearty pack-lunch. All riding abilities are welcome; minimum age nine years. Open year round.

Adventure Ranch
Perched along the side of the Lillooet River, Adventure Ranch is the original horseback operation in the Sea to Sky area, circa 1970s. Open year round, two-hour rides depart three times daily (less in winter) and follow the Adventure Ranch trail through tall gasses and along the river. After the ride, 'back at the ranch, there is a swimming pool, gardens, volleyball courts and licensed patio to enjoy.
Copper Cayuse Outfitters
Operating in the Birkenhead Valley, trails include ancient routes that wind up the mountainside, through quiet forest and along the banks of the Birkenhead River. Copper Cayuse Outfitters offer one and two-hour rides, half day adventures and multi-day wilderness excursions complete with setting up a real cowboy 'fly camp' of canvas lean-tos, modern tents alongside a campfire for a gourmet camp-cooked meal.
Less hardy souls can opt for the multi-day trip that combines wilderness riding with lodge accommodations. There's also a specialty ride that searches out plants used in traditional herbal medicine.
