Skiing & Snowboarding
Skiing (Canadian Tourism Commission photo)
Pristine wilderness, breathtaking steeps, fresh tracks, exhilarating tree-skiing, and postcard-perfect landscapes await skiers and snowboarders who venture into northern British Columbia.
Mountains of powder create some of the deepest snow bases on the continent. And enjoy short to non-existent lift line-ups at one of Northern BC's ski hills: Hudson Bay Mountain Resort (formerly known as Ski & Ride Smithers), Powder King Mountain Resort or My Mountain Co-op Shames Mountain. Smaller, uncrowded and economical downhill skiing and snowboarding areas can also be found in Northern BC.
Snowy winters here mean ski hills usually open in November and close in April.

Ski Resorts in Northern BC
Hudson Bay Mountain Resort (20 minutes west of Smithers) is the largest ski and snowboard area in Northern BC. Thirty-six runs and four lifts overlook the spectacular Bulkley Valley and access some of the best and driest powder in the region. A terrain park combines a good mix of sculpted hits, flowy rails, jumps and boxes that are all spaced evenly for maximum flow. Ski or ride the “Trail to Town” run; start from the top of the mountain right into Smithers. This ski run provides 1,151m/3,776ft of continuous vertical.
Nestled in the unspoiled wilderness of the Canadian Rockies, Powder King Mountain Resort at Pine Pass (50 minutes east of Mackenzie) receives an average annual snowfall of nearly 12.5m/41ft and boasts some of the deepest powder in Northern BC. Thirty-seven runs cover terrain that ranges from deep drops to gentle groomed slopes. On-mountain accommodation, restaurants, and a lounge round out the resort experience.
Fresh tracks, deep powder and an expansive backcountry lure skiers and boarders north to My Mountain Co-op Shames Mountain (25 minutes west of Terrace). Carve through blankets of fresh snow – an average of more than 12m/39ft annually – on 28 marked trails that cover 57ha/141ac and range from beginner to double black diamond. Natural glades offer 45ha/111ac of tree skiing and backcountry trails beckon adventurous skiers to explore the vast, untouched terrain.
Smaller Ski Areas in Northern BC
Smaller ski areas in this region include: Murray Ridge Ski Area near Fort St. James; Bear Mountain Ski Hill near Dawson Creek; and Tabor Mountain Ski Resort or Purden Ski Village (both near Prince George).
